School Based Social Work Support

School Based Social Work Support

School-based social work services

We appreciate schools have the responsibility of looking after the safety and emotional wellbeing of children, identifying safeguarding concerns and providing support to children and their families in different circumstance.

  • However, do school staff have the appropriate skills, experience, and time in their teaching day to manage all the challenging issues that children may bring with them to school?
  • Does responding to child protection and safeguarding issues allow teaching staff to focus on providing children with good quality education and affording children the opportunity to reach their full academic potential?
  • Do school staff have the right support or advice from a social work expert when confronted with situations affecting children outside of school

We will provide a social worker to be based within the school one day per week for consultation, advice, and collaborative working with children and families. This is crucial in strengthening the emotional resilience of school staff, reducing their workload, and allowing them to focus on teaching children. The school will decide what tasks/activities they wish the social worker to provide such as:

  • Provide advice and consultancy to school staff on issues including the following:
  • Mental health of children
  • Mental health of adults
  • Domestic abuse in families
  • Parental drug and alcohol misuse

  • Observing children in the classroom
  • Discussions with children, with a parent’s consent as well as undertaking direct work to elicit their wishes and feelings and explore their lived experiences at home and in the community
  • Attendance at Social Care meetings – child protection conferences, core group meetings, Child in Need meetings.
  • Help schools to access community resources to support children.
  • Advise and support around contextual safeguarding (CSE/CE, gangs, county lines)
